Cumulonimbus Clouds

Cumulonimbus clouds are a type of cloud associated with thunderstorms and severe weather conditions. They are large, towering, and vertically developed due to powerful updrafts of air. Cumulonimbus clouds can reach altitudes of over 39,000 feet (12,000 meters), extending through much of the troposphere. The top of these clouds can spread out into an anvil shape. They are capable of producing heavy rain, snow, hail, lightning, and even tornadoes. The appearance of cumulonimbus clouds usually signifies that a storm with potential severe weather is imminent or occurring. The term ‘cumulonimbus’ comes from Latin, ‘cumulus’ meaning heap and ‘nimbus’ meaning rain.
