Lightning

Lightning is a natural atmospheric electrical discharge that occurs during thunderstorms. It is a sudden, powerful, and visible flash of light that is caused by the movement of electrical charges within a thundercloud or between a thundercloud and the ground. Lightning is typically accompanied by the sound of thunder, which is produced by the rapid expansion and contraction of air surrounding the lightning channel. Lightning can take various forms, including cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning, which strikes from the cloud to the ground, and intra-cloud (IC) lightning, which occurs within the cloud. It is a result of the buildup and release of electrical energy in the atmosphere. Lightning is extremely hot, reaching temperatures hotter than the surface of the Sun, and can cause wildfires, damage to structures, and pose a threat to human safety. Lightning is a fascinating and powerful natural phenomenon studied by meteorologists and atmospheric scientists to better understand its behavior and improve lightning detection and forecasting systems.
